An “epic” day of fun and good memories summed up The Bob Comp surfing event at Makorori Beach on Saturday.

Honouring the late Bob Hansen — an inspirational teacher, surfer and long-time north Makorori resident — the event brought together a range of ages and surfing experience.

The highlight of the day was a tag team event.

Each team member rolled a dice to decide which board they used — either a single-fin, twin-fin, longboard, bodyboard or foam top.

The winners were Team Pink’s Don Pearson, Che Whitaker, Flo Bub, Hannah Kohn and Dylan Walsh Munro, who was also presented the Bob Award for surfing spirit.

Gabe Lobb won the Grom Award.

Fittingly, Bob Hansen’s son Bobby produced the ride of the day early in the event, a sweet barrel on a single-fin board.

While the event is called the Bob Comp, the focus was very much on enjoyment, togetherness and remembrance of a hugely popular man known as “the Sheriff of Makorori”.
